What's Your Process?

Hello Everyone!

My name is Joshua, host of The TechSpot. My channel is essentially a news satire. I cover real news stories and crack jokes to make a point about my opinions surrounding the stories. Each week I browse the internet looking for stories revolving around the world of science, technology and gaming. I look for stories I find interesting, funny or weird. Initially what I would do was browse the web for one story, write the script for it, record the voice over for the script, then look up images / b-roll to cover the story. I would do this until I was done the whole bit.

This week I tried something different. I found all my stories, wrote out the entire script, gathered as much graphics / b-roll that I think I need to cover the audio. Next I'm going to record the audio, and edit together each sequence. I'm curious to see if this makes a difference in my editing time this week. I definitely don't feel as stressed as most weeks although I feel like I am super far behind since I've got nothing edited. I do believe the graphics and finding B-roll is the hardest part of my process and takes the most time so hopefully I can burn through the editing process now.

I'd love to hear about your work flow? Do you write a script? Do you just wing it? How do you guys make your videos?

One issue I can see about doing this would be that you postpone finishing them due to a part of the process that you don't like to do. Say you aren't a fan of the editing part so you get everything else done that you can up to that point. Would you keep going the same way or will you "suffer" through it and finish one video at a time after that ?

It's more of a convenience thing. I find it very hard to edit when I'm visiting my Dad. I am often working and trying to socialize. At least with the graphics I could work pretty steadily without having to pay too much attention. Editing is rather easy if you have enough footage to cover your audio. The issue I find comes up when I run out of B-roll and need to find something else to add to my video so that the pacing is right. I'm getting better at procuring enough stuff though before editing and most times after my draft renders I only have to make very minor changes.

I don't hate editing / building graphics. I just hate editing with so many people around but I can't avoid people sometimes (I got to my dads for laundry and groceries every other week.)

Ahh gotcha. Well sounds like you are well on your way to having a natural flowing process.

Hopefully more people will respond to your question because I know this is one area I kinda struggle in too. (what to do first ?)

But I totally understand about the challenges in putting things together around people. My current studio is in the living room and we have 2 ways in and no way to close it off.
 
You're a lot more thought out than I am when it comes to my YouTube videos. I just wing mostly everything when it comes to them, other than writing down the general idea of the videos so I don't forget them.

I think one of the advantages I have of never actually being on camera is I can have a really well thought out script that doesn't feel awkward or forced as it sometimes does on camera. I've done the on camera thing before and looking back at my older stuff you could see at times that I was trying to remember what I wanted to say. I know I considered going back to on camera when I started up this project again once I had my own office but I'm really liking the stylistic direction my current videos have taken.

One thing you might be interested in seeing is my media folders / how I organize my files. I just finished setting up my media and now I'm ready to edit.

The video I expect will be around 4 minutes long once I'm done.
 
1) I pick a game
2) I record footage of the game
3) I watch back the footage and write the script
4) Do all the voice recordings
5) Do all the editing
6) Render, upload, thumbnail, etc.

I do want to start doing videos that talk more about a single video game, but that's going to take a whole new level of organization and planning. I'm currently planning out a video on "Iphone VR Games"

I have a friend who had a let's play channel. He would upload mostly let's plays but he did upload a few videos of him reviewing a game (essentially a review / rant) that scored him thousands of views (I think he hit the hundred thousands.) His let's play videos barely reached 100 views. Kind of weird how YouTube works lol.

My "reviews" are only getting 50-200 views so far. Hopefully that number goes up in the near future.
