I've Got It
Pretty much their thumbnails are just a frame and a little blue banner at the bottom with the name of the video written on it. I'd like to make something with a banner like that, because its so simple yet nice looking. Would I need Photoshop for this? If yes, how would I make it?

You DEFINITELY do not need photoshop for those.

You can probably do that in paint haha.

If you want a program similar to photoshop that is free, I'd use GIMP. If you are going to be making simple thumbnails like that GIMP is more than capable.

Their thumbnails look like nothing more than a picture with blue rectangle pasted on top of it, and then they moved the text into the rectangle.

Um his thumbnails from the looks of it is just a screen shot/picture from the video, Then in the corner it says there yt name and then a blue slide out lookin thing that says what the videos about. I think you can do this pretty easily with gimp or photoshop

Well this can be done in 3 VERRYYY easy steps..
1) Take a frame out of the video you want to use.
2) Write the title of the video in a font + colour you like
3) create a blue/other colour box and make sure the text fits inside it.

DONE xD

I would suggest using GIMP 2.0 because its free and is great for making thumbnails. Then get a blue rectangle, overlay it onto your image, write what you want and BOOM! thumbnail. there are alot of tutorials if you're still confused

If you want to, check out my post in the branding section here on YTTalk. I posted a download with some social media templates including a template for thumbnails. It's made for Photoshop, but GIMP should be able to open Photoshop files aswell :)
