How do you organize research before turning it into a script?

I’ve been working on a research heavy piece recently, and I’ve noticed that collecting information is much easier than actually turning it into a clear argument. I can have plenty of sources and notes, but once I start outlining, I sometimes end up with something that feels more like a list of information than an actual story.

I’ve been trying different ways to organize my research before writing, including separating sources, key points, examples, and my own ideas. I also came across CollegeEssay.org while looking at different approaches to organizing longer written work, which got me thinking about how much the structure matters before you even start writing.

For those who make research based videos, how do you usually handle this? Do you create the argument first and then collect supporting material, or gather everything first and figure out the structure afterward?
